Sophia University will hold the United Nations Weeks from June 8 to 20, 2015

Sophia University offers opportunities to consider our global future through UN activities. The period from Monday June 8 to Saturday June 20, 2015 has been designated as The United Nations Weeks at Sophia. First held in 2014, this initiative is now taking place for the third time, and each year features a range of opportunities to consider our future and that of the world through UN activities.

On June 8, there will be a Special Symposium in Observance of the 70th Anniversary of the United Nations “The United Nations in the 21 st Century: Reflecting on the 70th anniversary and building the future”, featuring a keynote speech by Ms. Angela Kane, UN High Representative for Disarmament Affairs, and a panel discussion by Ms. Kane, former UN Undersecretary-General Yasushi Akashi, and Yasuhiro Ueki, a professor in the Sophia University Faculty of Global Studies and former UN spokesman. (Registration required)

A photographic exhibition “Nowhere People: The World’s Stateless” focusing on stateless people will be held from June 8 to 20. Not recognized as citizens of any country, the world’s stateless must live in extreme uncertainty, without the protection of any nation to guarantee their human rights, freedom, or livelihood. The exhibition considers issues faced by the stateless through the lens of photographer Greg Constantine.
