Professor Sozaburo Mitamayama Attends “TIME FOR PEACE” Event Co-hosted by the UN Pavilion
On August 10, 2025, Professor Sozaburo Mitamayama, Head of the International Exchange Office at CTRE of our university, attended the “TIME FOR PEACE” event co-hosted by the United Nations Pavilion at Expo 2025 Osaka, Kansai, at the invitation of Ms. Sumiko Hatakeyama from the international NGO Peace Boat.
At the first “TIME FOR PEACE” event, distinguished speakers included:
- Mr. Maher Nasser (United Nations Assistant Secretary-General, Commissioner-General of the United Nations at Expo 2025)
- Ms. Izumi Nakamitsu (UN Under-Secretary-General and High Representative for Disarmament Affairs)
- Mr. Tanaka Terumi, Co-Chair of 2024 Nobel Peace Laureate Nihon Hidankyo
- Ms. Melissa Parke (Executive Director of ICAN, recipient of the 2017 Nobel Peace Prize)
- Mr. Tatsuya Yoshioka (Founder and Director of Peace Boat)
They engaged in discussions on topics such as the abolition of nuclear weapons and pathways toward achieving peace in Ukraine and Gaza.
The event also featured performances by Mr. Hideto Nimura, UNESCO Artist for Peace and violinist, as well as the popular boys’ idol group JO1.
The second part of “TIME FOR PEACE” featured a striking drone performance over the water, conveying a strong message of peace. Professor Mitamiyama attended as an observer and, in a modest way, expressed his support through a small personal donation.
Our university has previously collaborated with Peace Boat on tourism education initiatives, rooted in the idea that tourism can serve as a “passport to peace.”
Looking ahead, we hope to continue supporting such endeavors and to contribute, within our capacity, to promoting peace through research and education in tourism.
