Three-University Data Science Symposium
This year the ‘Three-University Data Science Symposium’ was held at Osaka Seikei University. The symposium brought three universities with data science departments Osaka Seikei University, Shiga University and University of Hyogo to exchange information, shared issues and discussed solutions for education in data science, including collaboration with high schools and career paths after graduation. In addition to research presentations by faculty members and students from each university, a panel discussion on ‘The current state of high school information education’ was held by high school teachers to check the current state of high school information education.
Tetsuya Fujie, Dean of the Faculty of Social and Information Sciences at the University of Hyogo, lectured about the faculty. He stated, ‘Under the concept of “to solve problems faced by an increasingly sophisticated and complex society and organisations based on data science”, the Faculty aims to educate students who desire to make change in the world and contribute to society using practical data science. In addition, PBL exercises are conducted from the first year to prepare for working.’
He also highlighted future developments, “We have specialists in algorithms and other mathematical informatics, so we target both as the pillar of the faculty. In addition, by strengthening cooperation with the Graduate School of Information Science, enhancing basic subjects such as mathematics, programming and probability statistics, and promoting industry-university cooperation, joint research and high school-university collaboration, we aim to further develop the characteristics of this faculty and foster advanced IT personnel in Hyogo Prefecture and, by extension, in Japan”.
Mr Kaido Goto, a fourth-year student supervised by Professor Munehiko Sasajima School of Social Information Science, UOH presented his research ‘Data to solve social problems Usage of local government’s health check-up data’, in which he made proposals for health policy based on data analysis of infant checkups conducted in Harima-cho, Kako-gun, Hyogo Prefecture. He gave out a message for the high school students in the audience, ‘It is difficult to discover and solve social problems, but it is rewarding. I hope more high school students become interested in data science’.
Associate Professor Junichi Teruyama from the Faculty took the podium for the research presentations by young faculty. He explained the steps of conducting research and essential for data science is to know and be able to use sorting algorithms well. He also stated data science is a familiar issue.
