Introduction of Tokyo Metropolitan University

Tokyo Metropolitan University (TMU), the only public university operated by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government, has been continuing a constant reform in various fields such as globalization, diversity and philanthropy, not to mention education and research. Concentrating our intellectual resources, TMU is determined to help produce personnel who can actively participate flexibly responding to societal changes, and by promoting a variety of basic and applied research and study on urban issues, contribute to the advancement of Tokyo which may lead to a future insight for the rest of the world.

1.Basic Philosophy
TMU’s mission is “to pursue the vision of an ideal human society in a metropolis.” Based on this mission, our basic philosophy is to give instruction and conduct research in a broad range of knowledge and in highly specialized sciences, and then, through collaboration with industry and educational and research institutions, etc., to produce education and research results that are relevant to large cities, to nurture students rich in humanity and creativity, and to contribute to the improvement and development of human society.

3.Academic Field
TMU provides education and research covering a wide range of academic fields including some of state-of-the-art domains. For undergraduate education, we have 7 faculties: Humanities and Social Sciences, Law, Economics and Business Administration, Science, Urban Environmental Sciences, Systems Design, and Health Sciences. For graduate level, we have 7 graduate schools: Humanities, Law and Politics, Management, Science, Urban Environmental Sciences, Systems Design and Human Health Sciences. In addition, we have Graduate Program of Midwifery.
