NEWS | Seminar for United Nations Day at Tohoku University

On November 10, 2014 , Kaoru NEMOTO, director of the United Nations Information Centre, was invited to hold a commemorative seminar for United Nations Day at Tohoku University's Kawauchi-Kita Campus.

At the seminar, the theme of which was "Curiosity is the Engine!," she talked about her work experiences in professional environments where women were the minority, and the resolve that led her to study abroad. Her discussion on the importance of education, which she witnessed firsthand as an intern at a Nepalese refugee camp, descriptions of experiences, and advice were great motivation for students interested in global activities. Using images and case studies of global issues, she described points of similarity between the UN Information Centre's role and the media, providing specific examples. This gave the students a good opportunity to raise their awareness of international issues.

After the seminar, she carefully answered each of the questions from the students, providing a great first step for those interested in global careers.

Profile of Lecturer:

Kaoru NEMOTO, Director of the United Nations Information：Graduated from University of Tokyo, Faculty of Law. Through TV Asahi, obtained a Master degree in international relations from Columbia University. From 1996 to 2011 worked on refugee support activities in Asia and Africa for the UNHCR (UN High Commission for Refugees). Coordinator for policy making and acquisition of activity funds from the private sector at the UN's Geneva headquarters. Successively held office as the WFP (World Food Programme) Public Relations Office and UNHCR Office director. Worked as a freelance journalist until appointment to her present position in August 2013.
