Introduction of Utsunomiya University

Utsunomiya University’s fundamental mission is to improve the welfare of mankind and contribute to world peace through distinctive high-quality education and research as an institution open to society. To achieve this goal, we have established the following three fundamental policies.

1.Utsunomiya University will offer its students a broad, in-depth education, along with practical expertise, so that they can develop the abilities and skills necessary to open new doors to the future.
2.Utsunomiya University will promote top-level research focused on the development of a sustainable society.
3.Utsunomiya University will aggressively expand activities that learn from and contribute to both the local community and the international community.

Also, we cherish the “3C Spirit.” The 3 C’s are “Challenge,” “Change,” and “Contribution.” We are pioneering a bright future by actively challenging new things, by constantly changing ourselves to adapt to these changing times, and by generously contributing to our society. With the 3C Sprit as our motto, we have promoted SDGs and supported the education, research, and social contribution activities of our faculty members and students. Taking this opportunity of joining UNAI, we will develop further activities than ever.

One of our efforts that clearly shows our policies and 3C Spirit is the “Programme for Developing Human Resource to Contribute to SDGs by Merging African Potential and Japanese Scientific Technology”, commonly called “UU-A (abbreviation for ‘Utsunomiya University and African universities’).” It was adopted as an ‘Inter-University Exchange Project” by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology of Japan (MEXT) in FY2020. In this program, we will develop human resources who can understand sustainable development based on the social structure and potential of local communities in Africa, centered on high-productivity agriculture including a system of distribution, processing and sales, and contribute to joint activities between Japan and Africa. In FY 2021, we conducted an international web online course and symposium series with 6 partner universities in Africa. In addition, we will hold a “UU-A Student Summit 2022” for master’s students from 7 universities gathered in UU-A on March 8-10, 2022. It is the world’s first conference where overseas master’s students gather and make presentations about their research in relation to the perspective of SDGs.
