Developing an environmentally friendly fire foam
Fire foams to date have been viewed as problematic because the foam does not disappear for many hours after a fire has been extinguished, or it causes environmental pollution when chemical agents are washed into rivers, the ocean, and paddy fields. Therefore, a research group comprised of members including Prof. Kazuya Uezu from the Faculty of Environmental Engineering has developed a fire foam without synthetic surfactants that has little impact on plants and animals. Not only is the fire foam environmentally friendly, but it also has numerous advantages, including being suitable for smaller fire trucks, causing less strain when spraying and thus reducing the number of firefighters needed, and keeping lower floors free of flooding when extinguishing fires at multi-dwelling complexes. This fire foam is being used by an increasing number of municipalities.
