Introduction of Osaka Prefecture University
Osaka Prefecture University (OPU) is one of the largest public universities in Japan and a leader in advanced research across a wide range of disciplines. Located in southern Osaka, OPU consists of four colleges (College of Sustainable System Sciences, College of Engineering, College of Life, Environment, and Advanced Sciences, and College of Health and Human Sciences) with thirteen undergraduate schools and seven graduate schools.
As a leading university in science and engineering, OPU faculty and staff are committed to realizing our university mission to promote “Academic Excellence and Cutting-edge Research for a Global Age” and to nurture researchers, engineers and others with advanced technical skills and knowledge who will become contributing members of society.
OPU is committed to a full range of education, research, and social engagement activities that are relevant to all the ten universal principles of the United Nations Academic Impact (UNAI) initiative, with special emphasis on building capacity in higher education systems across the world (Principle 5); encouraging global citizenship through education (Principle 6); promoting sustainability through education (Principle 9); and promoting inter-cultural dialogue and understanding, and the “unlearning” of intolerance, through education (Principle 10). Examples of our activities that are representative of our commitment to UNAI principles include:
– Establishment in 2012 of the College of Sustainable System Sciences, which is dedicated to building a sustainable society for the future.
– Taking a central role in organizations that are relevant to Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) in Japan.
– Providing support systems and an environment conducive to cultivating global experiences and new ideas for our university members as well as local and global society.
Through our education, research, and social engagement activities, OPU will continue contributing to the development of sustainable society (SDG activities) and the globalization of our university.
