Promoting Fair Trade
Do you know what “fair trade” is? Fair trade is a simple way you can participate in international cooperation by shopping, in which you play a part in eliminating exploitation and mitigating poverty in developing countries. Fair trade products are produced in ways that are environmentally friendly and ensure that human rights are upheld. Examples include pesticide-free cotton production and banning child labor in the cultivation of cocoa, the main ingredient of chocolate. In order to increase students’ and others’ awareness of disparities and inequalities in the current global trade system, Professor Tsuyoshi Ohira of the Faculty of Foreign Studies established the fair trade advocacy organization Etica, and also engages in efforts such as holding symposiums that feature speakers who are involved in various aspects of fair trade and holding showings of DVDs on international problems.
