International Symposium, “Genocide and International Cooperation in Rwanda – How to Prevent Abusive Behavior and Outflow of Refugees was held

As part of the activities of Human Resource Development Program for

International Cooperation between Rikkyo, Meiji and International University

of Japan, have organized an International Symposium, "Genocide and

International Cooperation in Rwanda – How to Prevent Abusive Behavior

and Outflow of Refugees”.

In 2014, there was Genocide In Rwanda said to be the worst in 20th

Century, and 20 years have already passed since the worst refugee

crisis, known as Rwanda Crisis. Through this opportunity, he

analyzed the context about genocide and the influences given to

the African Great Lakes Region, from the refugees, internally displaced

and returnees (former refugees) point of view. After that, discussion was

made about what kind of International Cooperation should be provided

by the ‘international community’ for the future preventions of brutalities

in Rwanda and/or other countries to maintain long-lasting peace.

The keynote speaker, Mr. Filip Reyntjens, Professor of Antwarp University,

Belgium, globally known for his studies about law and politics in Central

Africa especially Rwanda, have spoken. Maybe due to the film “Hotel

Rwanda”, many researchers and students showed interests about refugees,

development, governance and peacebuilding. The speech was precious

opportunity for them to learn about the gap between the theories and the

reality. It was simultaneously translated in Japanese.
